We are thrilled in the coming weeks we will have not one but two author events. Pic' Picot's Memoir at midday on the 25th August in the Cinema lounge and then Julie Zarifeh and Matt Calman's combined talk on resilience on the 5th September.
We will be advertising more details in The Messenger in the next couple of weeks and taking bookings in the shop, by phone (021 090 46330), or via email.
Julie Zarifeh's Grief on the Run and Matt Calman's The Longest Day on Father's Day, 5th September will be a tour de force. They will share their important message on coping with adversity through significant physical undertakings - Julie through walking the Camino de Santiago trail in Spain and Matt with tackling the Coast to Coast. A special event for men and women alike. Cinema Paradiso will also be showing the film Camino Skies as part of this special event. More details to come in the Messenger and in a special email reminder later in the month. Make sure you put your name down at the shop, by phone (021 090 46330), or via email.
In other news - we hoped you spotted the prominent article and very nice photograph in The Otago Daily Times Business pages about three women who have entered the book trade since Covid. One of the three was our very own Sally Battson who gave a fascinating talk on her full-circle journey from book shop assistant at 14 to bookshop owner- a few decades later.
Quote of the day definitely went to Sally:
"Buy books from people who want to sell books NOT colonize the Moon."
The Booker Longlist. We are proud we independently choose (with a little help from our book reps!) a good number of books on the list. This was based on the strength of the authors and our interest in their writing. Klara and the Sun was a shoe-in but the others are all complex and diverse writers. Mary Lawson deserves a special mention - not only is she a long admired writer but this is her first new book for ten years. "Three characters and attendant personalities, tensions and histories. Lawson’s latest work is set in Northern Ontario in 1972 and explores the relations between three people brought together by fate."
