Reading for fun, these school holidays!
With school holidays upon us, it’s time to get onto some new reads for your youngsters, to keep them engaged and their brains working. Graphic Novels are an excellent choice. Their combination of refined wording and stunning illustrations engage the mind in a variety of ways. The reader has to interpret the images and build comprehension of the full impact of the story.
Here are three choices, with wonderful friendships, problems solving, and magical worlds that are easy to get lost in.
Paws is a series about best friends, cute dogs, and all the fun (and trouble) that comes with them. Beautifully illustrated, we follow three best friends, Gabby, Priya and Mindy, who decide to start a dog-walking business. With similar vibes to The Baby-Sitters Club, this is sure to keep any animal-loving little ones reading these holidays. Suitable for early and junior readers.
Wingbearer by Marjorie Liu and Teny Issakhanian, is another magnificent choice for middle grade readers who have enjoyed Amulet and the Wings of Fire series.
In this magical fantasy world, we follow Zuli and her guardian owl, Frowly, as they set off on an adventure from their home in the Great Tree, to find the force that is threatening the magic of their tree. A fun and easy read full of bright and beautiful illustrations, this is sure to keep readers young and old entertained.
Project Nought by New Zealand author and illustrator, Chelsey Furedi, is a fast-paced, time travel adventure, perfect for early teens and young adults.
We join Ren, a teenager living in the 90’s when he wakes up in Auckland in the year 2122, as part of a time travel program. When things don’t seem to be as they appear a group of friends, from both the past and the future, race against time to discover what is really going on and what Chronotech (the company behind the time travel program), might be hiding.
As well as these, we have a wide range of graphic novels in store for readers of all ages and levels. Feel free to ask us about them next time you visit.
Happy holidays and happy reading friends!
Sarah.
