A new voice in the Percy Jackson Universe
Let’s dive into the new standalone by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro - The Sun and the Star
Set in the world of Percy Jackson, comes a new adventure starring fan favourites Nico di Angelo, the son of Hades, and Will Solace, the son of Apollo.
When a prophecy calls Nico back to the Underworld to help rescue his friend Bob, his boyfriend Will insists on joining him on this quest, and they set off together to fulfill the prophecy.
What follows is an epic adventure, with many obstacles and challenges for the heroes to get past. We meet an array of different characters, good and bad, and I loved the way the book included the back-story of Nico and Will's meeting. Rick Riordan brought young adult author Mark Oshiro into this project to help ensure that Nico as a gay character, and his relationship with Will, was portrayed accurately - and it was spot on. Their young love was honest, believable and heartwarming, and not without its own obstacles in this story.
This was my first book in the Percy Jackson world and I thoroughly enjoyed it. While it did talk about previous quests and characters from the older series, these were all explained so you got the gist of what happened.
The Sun and The Star is a fantastic read that will appeal to mature middle-grade readers through to young adults. Fans of Percy Jackson will love this, and new readers might just find an epic new author with a whole backlist of titles to choose from.
Happy reading!
