Dear Readers,
Whoopee! The end of the year is near and the holidays in sight. And, what better time to review the books we loved in 2023.
It's been another fabulous year of books and our shop's Fiction bookclub reads have been interesting and enjoyable for different reasons (even the ones we love to hate). Here is a roundup of what we read and what we enjoyed and some favourite picks from the Staff.
The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li.
Trespasses by Louise Kennedy (Caroline’s pick).
The Guest by Emma Cline (Jen’s pick).
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang.
The Wren, The Wren by Anne Enright.
Prophet Song by Paul Lynch Booker Prize Winner 2023 and the shop Bookclub read for October - weren’t they clever to get that one right!
The Axeman’s Carnival by Catherine Chidgey (Alex’s pick).
Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton.
Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese (Sally's pick)
A Runner's Guide to Rakiura by Jessica Howland Kany.
Better the Blood by Michael Bennett Winner of the Ngaio Marsh Award (Sarah’s pick).
Children’s Book Drive for the Community Hub - Thankyou to everyone who has supported this. There's still time to pop in and choose a book for $10 which will be gifted to children and families who may face a difficult Christmas. The books are on the book trolley in front of the shop.
Your “Time Out” at the Next Chapter
Treat yourself to an hour of reading or book browsing. Drop in to the shop every Thursday between 5pm-6pm until Christmas, grab a drink and enjoy some time for yourself. The shop will stay open to 6pm and it might just be the tonic you need at this hectic time. (And, if you like, we can look after your phone for you).
New surcharge on pay wave / credit card - As a small business, we have made the decision to add a surcharge of 1.5% to credit and contactless transactions. There is no surcharge for EFTPOS or debit cards that are inserted.
