This is an occasional series focussing on a popular literary writer and re-introducing some of their back titles. Our first focus is on the Irish writer: Colm Tóibín.
Many of us have loved his books for decades and his commitment to his Southern hemisphere readers has seen him at both the Sydney and Auckland Writers Festivals (2022).
His newest book is the long awaited Long Island (released 30th April, 2024): a sequel to his modern masterpiece Brooklyn (2009) which was adapted into the film starring Saorise Ronan in 2015. On the 23rd May The Guardian is hosting a live online Q and A.
Date: Thursday 23rd May 2024 Times: 7pm – 8.30pm (BST) (this time works well for us as it is Friday morning in New Zealand.)
In anticipation of Long Island his publishers have reissued his backlist with evocative and stylish covers. (There is a display in the shop). Whether he is a new or familiar name to you why not try one of his short earlier titles: The Blackwater Lightship, The South or The Story of the Night.
There’s also The Master, based on the life of writer Henry James, and The Magician which features the life of German author Thomas Mann.
